Checker Bar-b-que on St Augustine Road in South Jacksonville is a step back in time to the “Old Florida” that we’re rapidly losing. This place may be one of the last urban cracker haunts left to us with its mismatched chairs and tables, eclectic wall art and general 1940’s neighborhood “hole in the wall” ambiance.Art Jeanette, Chef /Owner has a giant sized personality with a heart to match as he creates what most all who have had the fortune to visit and feast, is the best Florida Cracker cooking the Sunshine State has to offer. On weekdays from 11:00 to 2:30 and 6:00 to 8:00 there’s an al a carte menu which features ribs, sweet local shrimp, fried green tomats seasonal greens locally and regionally caught fish, crab balls and a slaw that many diners call memorable. Saturdays, the place closes one hour later at 9:00. The Buffet feast on Friday and Saturday during dinner hours features all this and more. The mashed potats redolent with scallops throughout are famous among the regulars. The offerings vary seasonally according to what is fresh and available locally. No one leaves until they have had as much of the menu that they can hold. Tea and soft drinks are available with water to quench a thirst.
